I Used to Hide Behind Being an Introvert… Until I Realized This

If you’re a new entrepreneur or a creative, you’ve probably felt it—that overwhelming mix of excitement and fear when you think about putting yourself out there. Maybe you’re holding back because you feel like you’re not good enough, or you tell yourself, “If people see my work, that’s enough.” I used to think the same way. I believed I could hide behind my work and let it speak for itself. I told myself showing up more personally wasn’t necessary.

But here’s the truth: your story is powerful, and it deserves to be shared. Not only for you but for the people who are waiting to hear it—the ones who need your unique perspective to inspire their next step.

So let’s talk about how I overcame the fear of showing up, and more importantly, how you can, too. It all starts with understanding your “why” and taking that first step toward showing up authentically.

The Moment I Stopped Hiding

Earlier this year, I was invited to speak on a radio show. My first reaction? Panic.

I told myself I wasn’t qualified. I worried about stumbling over my words or sounding like I didn’t know what I was talking about. It felt safer to say no and stay in my comfort zone, but something in me knew I couldn’t keep playing small. I remembered my “why”—to inspire and guide others to step into their creativity and confidence, even when it feels scary. My “why” has always been about showing others that their story matters, and by sharing mine, I hope to empower them to do the same. So, I said yes.

Was it scary? Absolutely. But when I showed up and shared my story, something amazing happened. People connected with it. They saw themselves in my experiences and felt inspired to take action in their own lives. That one moment led to even bigger opportunities—like being a guest on two podcasts. Each time, I felt the same nerves, but I also felt a little braver.

The key? I leaned into the fear instead of running from it, and I remembered that fear is often a sign you’re on the brink of growth.

Why Your Story Matters

If you’re an introverted entrepreneur or creative, you might feel like your quiet nature is a disadvantage. But the truth is, your story—told in your own unique voice—is exactly what will set you apart. People don’t just connect with products or services; they connect with stories. They connect with authenticity.

Your story matters because it’s a bridge—a connection between where you started and where someone else wants to go. For example, earlier this year, I shared my journey of overcoming self-doubt and showing up despite my fears. That story resonated deeply with my audience, not because it was perfect, but because it was real. It allowed others to see themselves in my struggles and feel empowered to take their own next steps. Your story can do the same. When you share your experiences authentically, you invite others to connect, relate, and believe that if you can take the first step, so can they. It shows people that if you can do it, they can too. And as a creative or entrepreneur, your story is also the foundation of your brand. It’s what makes you memorable and trustworthy.

But here’s the catch: no one can connect with your story if you’re too afraid to share it. That’s why taking the first step—no matter how small—is so important.

The First Step: Getting Clear on Your Why

When you feel stuck or unsure, it’s often because you’re not clear on your “why.” Your “why” is your purpose—the reason you started your business or creative journey in the first place. It’s what keeps you going when things get tough and what guides your decisions when you feel uncertain.

Here’s a quick exercise to help you get clear on your “why”:

Create a T-Chart. Grab a piece of paper or open a notes app on your phone. Draw a line down the center to divide the page into two columns. On the right side, write down everything you don’t want in your life or business—the frustrations, roadblocks, or fears that hold you back. On the left side, write down what you want instead—your goals, dreams, and the positive changes you’d like to see.

Writing these things down gets them out of your head and onto paper where you can see them clearly. This simple act of putting your thoughts into words helps you stop spinning your wheels. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, you can identify what truly matters and start making decisions that align with your “why.”

Once your T-Chart is complete, it becomes a tool you can refer back to whenever you feel stuck. It’s a tangible reminder of what you’re working toward and what you want to leave behind. Instead of carrying the weight of your thoughts alone, you’ll have a clear visual to help guide your next steps.

This exercise comes from my coaches and has helped me gain clarity when I feel stuck.

Why 2025 Is the Year to Stop Hiding

With a new year around the corner, there’s no better time to step out of your comfort zone and start showing up for yourself. Here’s why:

  1. Opportunities Won’t Wait. The world is moving fast, and the longer you wait to share your story, the more opportunities you might miss.

  2. Progress Over Perfection. You don’t need to have everything figured out to take the first step. The most successful people didn’t start perfect—they just started.

  3. You’re More Ready Than You Think. If you’re waiting for the fear to go away, you’ll be waiting forever. Fear is a sign you care, and it’s something you can work through, one step at a time.

How to Show Up with Confidence (Even If You Only Have a Smartphone)

One of the biggest barriers new entrepreneurs and creatives face is feeling like they don’t have the right tools or resources to start. But it’s not just about tools—it’s also mindset and time. Maybe you’re doubting yourself, thinking you’re not ready, or telling yourself there’s no time to get started. These barriers can keep you stuck, but recognizing them is the first step to moving past them. But here’s the thing: you don’t need expensive gear to show up. All you need is your smartphone and a willingness to start.

That’s why I created the Creator Bundle. It’s a set of 9 video tutorials that teach you how to take professional-looking photos and videos using only your phone. From lighting and angles to storytelling techniques, these tutorials are designed to help you:

As we head into the new year, I want to challenge you to take one step out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s sharing a post about your journey, creating a short video, or finally launching that project you’ve been dreaming about—do something that scares you a little.

Remember, growth happens when you’re uncomfortable. And when you lean into that discomfort, you’ll discover that you’re capable of so much more than you thought.

So, what’s your first step? Whatever it is, take it. Your story deserves to be told, and the world is waiting to hear it.
