What I Learned About Life While Shopping for Hand Soap
From Five Below to Big Goals: How Small Steps Lead to Big Dreams
The other day, I had one of those small, everyday moments that sparked a much bigger thought about life. I was wandering through Five Below, looking for hand soap, when a store employee with a cart full of phone cases passed by. I stepped aside to let her go first, not wanting to come across as rude. She smiled, thanked me, and then noticed my shirt—a simple tee with the word "Pilates" on it.
“Does Pilates work?” she asked, curious about my experience. It was such a genuine question that it caught me off guard. I shared how I’d tried Pilates for a few months, how it helped with my posture, strength, and tight hips, but how I’d eventually stopped due to the cost. Then I added a quick tip: if she wanted to try working out, YouTube is a fantastic place to start. There are so many free workout videos that don’t require equipment, and it’s such an easy way to dip your toes into fitness.
Her curiosity reminded me of something so important: so many people want to try something new but feel stuck because they don’t know where to start. Often, all it takes is one step—asking a question, Googling an idea, or even letting inspiration from a stranger’s shirt spark a change.
The Power of Getting Clear on What You Want
That moment in Five Below stayed with me. It made me think about something Steve Harvey once said in a video I watched: if you don’t know what you want in life, make a list of 300 things. Everything you dream of, from personal goals to career aspirations, travel destinations, and even the tiniest desires, should go on that list.
I’ll admit, writing 300 things is no joke. I’m currently on #41, and it’s taking me weeks to get there. But the process has been eye-opening. It’s forced me to be intentional about what I truly want and where I’m headed. Writing things down makes them feel real—and achievable.
Your First Step Matters
Here’s the thing: change doesn’t happen overnight, but it starts with clarity and action. Maybe you want to learn a new skill, start a side hustle, or improve your health. Your first step could be as simple as asking someone a question, writing down your goals, or watching a YouTube tutorial.
It’s not about having all the answers right away. It’s about having the courage to start. Even if you don’t hit 300 items on your list, writing down 10 or 20 can give you a clearer picture of what’s important to you. And with a clear vision, you can begin moving toward the life you want.
